Tenth Annual Poetry Contest 

Rules for Submission to the Great Neck Plaza Poetry Contest
Sponsored by the Village of Great Neck Plaza, Hon. Jean Celender, Mayor,
and Long Island Traditions, Nancy Solomon, Executive Director
Carolyn Raphael, Poetry Coordinator
 

Residents 18 years of age and above from New York City, Nassau and Suffolk Counties are invited to submit up to three unpublished poems for an entry fee of $15.00 (non-refundable). No more than three poems may be submitted. The poems may be on any subject, in any style, to a maximum of 30 lines per poem.  The postmark deadline is February 14, 2020, and the winners will be announced on March 13, 2020 on the Village of Great Neck Plaza website, www.greatneckplaza.net.

Daniel Brown will be this year’s contest judge.  Daniel Brown's poems have appeared in Poetry, Partisan Review, PN Review, Parnassus, The New Criterion and other journals, as well as a number of anthologies including Poetry 180  (ed. Billy Collins) and The Swallow Anthology of New American Poets. His work has been awarded a Pushcart prize, and his collection Taking the Occasion (Ivan R. Dee, 2008) won the New Criterion Poetry Prize. His latest collection is  What More?  (Orchises Press, 2015). Brown's criticism of poets and poetry has appeared in The Harvard Book Review, The New Criterion, PN Review, The Hopkins Review  and other journals. Brown was a judge for the 2018 Poetry by the Sea Conference Poetry Contest, and has taught and lectured at the Frost Farm, West Chester, and Poetry by the Sea poetry conferences.

Prizes 

· First prize will be $150 and a 20-minute reading at the Great Neck Plaza Village Hall on April 5, 2020.

· Second prize will be $75 and a 10-minute reading at the Great Neck Plaza Village Hall on April 5, 2020.

· Third prize will be $50 and a 5-minute reading at the Great Neck Plaza Village Hall on April 5, 2020.

There will be two awards of Honorable Mention.  These poets will be invited to read their winning poems at the awards reading at the Great Neck Plaza Village Hall on April 5,  2020.  In addition, each of the three winning poems will be posted for one month on 7 secure outdoor village sign posts, on the bulletin board in Great Neck Plaza Village Hall, and in the waiting room of the Great Neck LIRR train station building.

Each poem that wins honorable mention will be posted for two weeks on the 7 sign posts, on the Village bulletin board in Great Neck Plaza, and in the waiting room of the Great Neck LIRR train station building.

 

Submissions Checklist 

1. Poems must be single-spaced and typed. One poem per page. Each poem should have a title.

2. Include two copies: one anonymous and one with the poet’s name and address below the poem.

3. There should also be a cover sheet listing the poems’ titles, the poet’s name and address, phone number, and e-mail address.

4. The poems should be mailed to The Village of Great Neck Plaza, 2 Gussack Plaza,  PO Box 440, Great Neck NY 11022-0440, Attn: Poetry Contest.

5. The check for $15.00 should be made payable to Long Island Traditions.

6. Enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope for results, or watch the Great Neck Plaza website, for announcement of the winners.

The Awards Day reading will be held on Sunday, April 5, 2020, at the Great Neck Plaza Village Hall (2 Gussack Plaza) at 12 P.M.  It will be free and open to the public. There will be an open reading as time permits.

  • February 17th, President's Day, Initially established to honor our nation's first president, George Washington, the day now honors U.S. presidents past and present. **Please note, in observance of the holiday, Village Hall will be closed.**
